Umrah from Calgary, Karachi and Houston: Fly into Madinah, Out of Jeddah (January)

Many Umrah travellers assume they have to land in Jeddah, but flying into Madinah and returning from Jeddah can save a transfer and often costs less. Here is what FJ Travels and Tours quoted for a mid-January Umrah, with travellers joining from three different cities.

The route

All three options arrive in Madinah and leave from Jeddah, so you finish in Makkah and head to the airport from there.

• Calgary → Madinah, 1 stop. Depart around 1:00 PM and arrive the next day at 4:25 PM. Return Jeddah → Calgary, departing 7:00 PM and arriving 7:00 AM the next morning.
• Karachi → Madinah, non-stop. Depart 3:00 AM, arrive 5:50 AM the same morning. Return Jeddah → Calgary on the same flight as the Calgary option.
• Houston → Madinah, 1 stop. Depart 2:55 PM and arrive the next day at 6:55 PM. Return Jeddah → Karachi, non-stop, departing 7:45 PM and landing at 1:30 AM two days later.

What it costs

The Karachi fare was the same for adults and children. These were quoted as one-way tickets, so the child discount that usually applies to return fares did not apply.

For comparison, a straight Calgary–Jeddah–Calgary return was quoted at $2,575 CAD. Flying into Madinah brought the Calgary fare down to $2,010 CAD.

Hotels and transport

For a stay of about four nights each in Makkah and Madinah, FJ quoted roughly $3,350 CAD for hotels about 400 m from the Haram in a quad room, including complete transport. Good to know

• Shifting the trip by a couple of days kept the same fare, so ask about nearby dates.
• Travelling in October instead of January was quoted at almost the same airfare, with accommodation slightly cheaper.
• Groups starting from different cities can meet in Madinah and return together from Jeddah.
• Seats at these fares are limited, so ask us to hold the lowest fare while you decide.
